Your Immune System Extends Throughout Your Body

Your immune system is not just one “thing.” It is an entire network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect you from potential hazards.

Your bone marrow, your thymus gland, your lymphatic system, skin, gut, spleen, and other areas are all involved in your immune-system function.

Two main components of immune function are intimately interconnected. These components work together to give you around-the-clock surveillance and defense.

Your first-line immune defense is called the innate immune system. Your skin, which provides a mechanical barrier to antibodies, is part of this innate system. Other examples of innate immune first-line defenders are the mucus and cilia lining your respiratory tract, as well as the saliva in your mouth and pH in your digestive tract. All of these mechanical and chemical defenses are part of your innate immune system and they work to protect your body from potential threats to your health.

The innate system also contains several types of immune cells, many of which are white blood cells. For example, neutrophils are a specific type of white blood cell, and the most numerous innate immune cells in your bloodstream. They are able to engulf and ingest invading organisms.

The second component of immunity is your adaptive immune system. Its weapons include antibodies against specific organisms, as well as a specific group of immune cells.

Adaptive immunity relies heavily on another type of white blood cell called a lymphocyte. These cells come in different forms. B lymphocytes are involved in antibody responses. During these responses, B cells secrete antibodies, which circulate in the bloodstream and other body fluids. These antibodies bind specifically to the foreign antigens that stimulated their production. This binding process functions to inactivate and neutralize pathogens.

Cell-mediated immune responses are the second class of adaptive immune response. In cell-mediated responses, activated T lymphocytes react directly against foreign antigens to either destroy them directly or signal other cells from the innate system for help.

Immune memory is a central feature of the adaptive immune response. When B or T cells become activated, they multiply rapidly. When the immune issue becomes resolved, these cells stop dividing but are retained in the body as memory cells. If the same pathogen enters the body again, a memory cell is set to react and remove the pathogen before it becomes established.

And here’s where age comes into the picture . . .

Aging Has a Huge Impact on Immune System Function

The term immunosenescence means that, with advancing age, some of your crucial immune system functions become altered.

Immunity relies heavily on T cells, which are produced primarily in the thymus gland located in your chest.

Your immune system contains two types of T cells. Naïve or “virgin” T cells, which are abundant early in life, respond initially to potential health concerns. However, once these cells respond to a specific threat, they convert to memory T cells. These memory cells are programmed to remember and respond to threats that recur.

Think about school teachers, hospital nurses, and pediatricians — these individuals come into direct contact with hundreds of immune‑system threats every day. Ideally, their T cells would encounter these immune‑system threats and the memory cells would then be programmed to remember and respond to those hazards whenever they occur in the future. Unfortunately, years of relying heavily on the body’s adaptive immune system can take a toll on these cells.

With aging, your thymus gland shrinks and the supply of naïve T cells can become depleted, making the immune response less vigorous. Additionally, worn‑out memory T cells begin to accumulate in excessive numbers, which leads to an imbalanced inflammatory response.

Immunosenescence also involves other changes. Your bone marrow contains stem cells that develop into a variety of immune‑related cells. With advancing age, bone marrow may become less able to produce these stem cells. Some of these are precursors to cells involved with your innate immune system, while other stem cells give rise to adaptive immune cells.

With aging there is often a decrease in the number of T helper cells and a decrease in what are called natural killer or NK cells. These NK cells are important in immune regulation. They help to eliminate used up or senescent immune cells that secrete pro‑inflammatory chemicals.
